Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost
Edward Feser is Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to becoming interim provost, Dr. Feser served as dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts at Illinois, overseeing academic and engagement programs in architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, design, and the visual and performing arts. At the University of Illinois, Dr. Feser holds professorships in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and Department and Agricultural and Consumer Economics. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Interim Vice Chancellor for Advancement
Senior Vice President for Development, University of Illinois Foundation
In this role, Ed serves as senior advancement officer for the campus with a split reporting role to the chancellor and to the president of the University of Illinois Foundation. Throughout his 22-year career with the Foundation, Ewald has served in various management and leadership positions, including interim president for the UIF and campaign director for the $2.43 billion Brilliant Futures campaign. Ewald joined the Foundation in 1992 in the planned giving department, following a 12-year career as an investment advisor and financial planner.
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
Dr. C. Renée Romano has served as the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since 2006. Student Affairs consists of many of the departments that create learning experiences for students outside the classroom such as Housing, the Dean of Students Office, Counseling, and Campus Recreation. Dr. Romano earned her bachelor’s degree in art and a master’s degree in higher education, both from Southern Illinois University. She completed her doctorate in higher education at Iowa State University.
Vice Chancellor for Research
Peter Schiffer provides leadership for campus-wide interdisciplinary research institutes, promotes new research initiatives, and oversees the administrative and business processes that ensure the productive, safe, and ethical conduct of research at Illinois. He is also a Professor of Physics. Before joining Illinois in 2012, Peter served in a number of administrative, faculty, and research roles at Pennsylvania State University. He received his B.S. from Yale University in 1988 and his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1993.
Michael DeLorenzo is Associate Chancellor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In this capacity he is the Chancellor’s liaison to the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics, University’s Office of Government Relations and has responsibility for the Division of Public Safety, Parking Department, Facilities and Services, and Willard Airport. Mike has a bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University, a master’s from The Ohio State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Katherine’s portfolio includes oversight of units that report to the Chancellor, such as the Office of Diversity, Equity and Access, the Academic Senate Office, the Police Training Institute, the Chancellor’s Office of Special Events, Swanlund Human Resources Shared Services Center and the Fire Service Institute. She also oversees public engagement for the campus and as the liaison to the Board of Trustees Office. Katherine joined the Office of University Counsel as associate counsel in 2007, moving to the Office of the Provost in 2010. She earned her J.D. from the University of Michigan.
Robin acts as spokesperson for the Urbana campus as well as acting as point for crisis communications. She is the director of Public Affairs which is responsible for campus media relations as well as campus level marketing, branding and communications services that include web, video and social media channels. Robin has been with the university since 1989. She holds three Illinois degrees: a bachelor’s, master’s degree as well as an MBA.
Associate Chancellor for Diversity
Assata Zerai is a professor of sociology whose research interests include promoting the voices of marginalized groups and improving inclusion. She serves as an associate dean in the Graduate College and as director of the Center for African Studies. She joined the faculty at Illinois in 2002. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
Chief, University of Illinois Police Department
Jeff is responsible for the management and oversight of the campus police and the Department of Public Safety. He has served in this role since 2012. As an undergraduate student at the Urbana campus, Jeff was one of the campus’s first student-patrol supervisors. He was hired as a patrol officer in 1985, promoted to lieutenant in 1990, and served as the department’s deputy chief and assistant director from 2005 through 2012.
Interim Executive Director, Facilities and Services
Helen Coleman was named interim executive director of F&S on May 23, 2016. She oversees all physical plant, operational, and essential services in support of the research, teaching, and public engagement activities of the university. Prior to assuming executive director duties, Coleman served as Director of Capital Programs and was responsible for developing and executing all capital improvement projects on the Urbana-Champaign campus. She holds a bachelor’s degree in building engineering from Lincoln University in Missouri and a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Director of Athletics, Division of Intercollegiate Athletics
Josh was named director of athletics in February, 2016. He previously served as athletic director at Washington University and at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse. He is a licensed attorney and previously practiced in Washington, D.C., serving clients that included Microsoft and the NFL. He also served as a judicial law clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He was a four year starting football player at Illinois and spent several seasons playing in the National Football League. He holds his bachelor’s and law degrees from Illinois.
